Swedish mid century candelabra. Hand carved and stained wood in an allmoge (folk art) pattern, this style is likely from the 1950's. In great condition, only minor stains and dents. The candle openings are on the small side, a regular size taper candle may have to be shaved a little to fit.

7.5" tall, 14.5" wide.

The term allmoge derives from Old Norse meaning ”all the people”, referring to the traditional folk art created in Scandinavia during 1600s–1900s. It reflects the everyday life, beliefs, and aesthetic traditions of farming communities before industrialization.

Rural households began decorating practical objects—furniture, chests, tools, textiles—with painted motifs, carvings, and embroidery. Norse and pagan symbolism influenced patterns and carvings. Imported trends such as Baroque and Rococo was simplified into local styles.

As mass-produced goods became available in the 1800s, traditional craftmaking declined. Many rural techniques were lost or practiced only in remote regions.

With national romanticism developing during late 1800s, came a renewed interest in folk culture. Artists and ethnologists documented vanishing traditions, museums and craft schools helped preserve techniques.

Contemporary artisans continue to reinterpret traditional forms, blending old motifs with modern aesthetics.
