Arabia was founded in 1873 in Helsinki, Finland, originally as a subsidiary of the Swedish porcelain maker Rörstrand. It soon became one of the leading ceramics manufacturers in the Nordic region, producing tableware, decorative ceramics, and industrial items. The company became Finnish-owned in 1916, later part of Wärtsilä Oy, and then acquired by Hackman in 1990. Since the 2000s, Arabia has been part of the Fiskars Group under the Iittala brand. Many influential designers worked for Arabia, including Kaj Franck, Birger Kaipiainen, Ulla Procopé, and Esteri Tomula, producing classic series like Kilta, Ruska and Paratiisi. Ulla Procopé designed Ruska in 1960, consisting of tableware with sturdy forms in a mottled brown glaze. The series was manufactured until the 1990s.
