Swedish rag rugs are traditionally woven from recycled cloth. Cotton rags and old clothing are torn into 3cm wide strips to be used as weft, woven into a strong cotton warp. With improved living standards in the later half of the 1800s, they became a popular decoration that would brighten up the family’s nicest room. By the 1880s, rag rugs had become commonplace in every home in Sweden. Often times several rugs in different palettes were used side by side, protecting from cold floors in the winter.
